Welcome to Playa del Carmen, or as the locals call it, simply “Playa”! The Yucatan Peninsula offers endless opportunities to explore, including nearby islands, cenotes, Mayan ruins, theme parks, and colonial towns such as Valladolid. And when it comes to the Mayan ruins, the state of Yucatán is where you will find the famous Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, while the Tulum and Coba ruins are in Quintana Roo, the same state as Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

For travelers, the best areas in Playa del Carmen are Downtown, North Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba, South Riviera Maya, and North Riviera Maya. Downtown, including the neighborhoods El Centro, Quinta Avenida, and Playacar, is known for its nightlife, shopping, and dining. North Playa del Carmen, a 30-minute walk to Downtown, is quieter and has a better beach. Mayakoba is a luxury resort complex in the jungle, with easy access to Downtown. South Riviera Maya includes the cenotes, jungle, and beaches between Playa and Tulum, while North Riviera Maya is home to some of the largest luxury resorts in Mexico, with beaches and attractions on the way to Cancun.

Of course, the highlight of any trip to Playa del Carmen is the beach, which stretches from the north end to the south end of the Riviera Maya. The sandy beach is wide and inviting, with gentle waves from Mayakoba to the South Riviera Maya near the town of Akumal. The section that passes by the town itself is narrower and more crowded, but still a beautiful place to soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal-clear waters.

So, what are you waiting for? Come to Playa del Carmen, where the beach is just the beginning of an incredible adventure!
